Rooftop solar a winner in South AustraliaWhen most people think of South Australia they probably think of the Murray River and the Adelaide Crows. But, for electricians, the state is well-known for its reliance on home solar power.

In fact, the state has some of the highest installation rates anywhere in the country, with many South Australians relying on the sun to power their homes, rather than drawing power from the mains.

This was thrown into the spotlight over Christmas, when the state saw a big chunk of its demand satisfied by solar.

On Boxing Day, South Australia saw total solar energy production peak at more than a third of demand, according to the Australian Photovoltaic Institute – a big achievement for power generation in the state. Between the hours of 11.30am and 3.30pm, solar power provided more than 30 per cent of the total energy demand.

These big figures can only be reached thanks to the considerable numbers of SA homeowners who have switched over to solar. According to the Australian Energy Market Operator and published in RenewEconomy, 22 per cent of homes in SA are now tapping into the power of the sun.

While solar power was a major contributor, wind power has also grown as a power source in South Australia. On December 26, wind power was also able to provide almost half of these state’s power needs, with these two sources providing over two-thirds of the total energy used in the region.
